It's all about bugs...

Any guesses on what's in the bucket? Let's just say it was intriguing, cool and gross all at the same time.

It was a Bess Beetle and it and its 7 other friends are the new inhabitants of our woodland terrariums. The kiddos were quite surprised by its size. We use bess beetles so we can see all of the insect parts in large size. We were easily able to find and identify the head, thorax, abdomen, antennae, 6 legs, and its mouth parts which are called mandibles. Have your child point out these parts on the picture below.


Would you believe that almost all of the kids were brave enough to "pet" him? But even more incredible was how many kiddos actually held him.
