Where do you like to read??

For the past 2 weeks we have been learning about 1 of our Daily 5 components, Read to Self. We created an anchor chart (a chart that goes on our wall to remind us of what we talked about) with our 5 expectations which are:
  1. Get started quickly (swing arms like you're walking fast)
  2. Stay in 1 spot (use super glue)
  3. Read quietly (shhhh...)
  4. Read the whole time (stretch arms out while saying "whole time")
  5. Build stamina (stack hands alternately)
Ask your child to show you our actions to go with each expectation (see orange above)

We've also talked about finding a just right spot to read. We talked about how just right spots are comfortable and let you be a reader. We then tried out different spots in our room to see where we were most comfortable. We tried out Mrs. Malchow's wheelie chair, laying on the floor, using the paw print stools, sitting by the fish tank, and more. See our list of spots we LOVE!
We then talked about how the coolest looking spots aren't always the best spots. While we were trying out spots, we also worked to build our stamina for reading. Our first few attempts didn't take us far, we were able to read for about a 2-3 minutes. By the end of the week, we had built our stamina up to be able to read for 8 minutes. This may not seem like much, but for little minds, this is a wonderful jump. Currently, we are reading independently for 10 minutes!! Having a comfie spot usually makes a BIG difference for little learners!

After trying several spots we wrote about our favorite spots as well. Our writing goal was to stretch words out and our illustrating goal was to use at least 5 colors and detail.
Where is YOUR favorite place to read? We would LOVE it if you would leave us comment and tell us about it!

  1. I love to read in my big, brown, comfy chair in my living room. I especially love to sit sideways in my chair with my feet hanging over the edge, a blanket covering me up and my lamp on. Ahhhhhh..... perfect reading every time!

  3. I love to read curled up on my couch under a big comfy blanket surrounded by lots of pillows. It's the best when I have a cup of coffee in one hand and my book in the other :)

  4. I love to read in bed surrounded by my big, squishy pillows and my warm, fuzzy blankets. It is even more enjoyable when my daughters drag in their blankets and pillows and we all read together!

  5. I love to read in my bed with my dogs, Chip and Gus. I love that when I finish reading I can dream about all the adventures from the book or I can think about all my learning from a nonfiction book. Have fun reading and I hope you have many fun reading adventures this year in Mrs. Malchow's class!

  6. I love to read in my cushioned wicker chair by my big south sliding glass door. The sun pours in and warms me up while I get lost in my book.

  7. My all time favorite place to read is either sitting in the middle of a canoe or on a big rock in the Boundary Waters. It is so relaxing to sit and read after working hard canoeing all day!

I love to read in our oversized chair with my knees tucked in and the fireplace going. Our dog usually comes and snuggles in as well.

  11. In the summer, I love to read on the hammock! But mostly, I read on my comfy couch near the lamp, covered in a blanket, and early (before my kids get up) with my coffee! I also love reading in the car on road trips!

  12. My favorite place to read is on our couch between commercials! You would be surprised how much reading you can get done this way. I read a lot! At work it's mostly nonfiction books learning new strategies and getting information that will hopefully make me a better principal, but at home I love to read fictional stories and biographies. I have downloaded and read over 20 books on my iPhone and typically read a full book in 3-5 days. My record is over 1300 pages in 2 days! (it was a detective novel and it happened last winter when it was cold and snowy over the weekend). Reading has always been a favorite thing of mine to do both in and out of school.

  14. My absolute favorite place to read is up in the Boundary Waters! If I'm not in a canoe, you will find me reading on the screened in porch at our cabin which overlooks exactly where the river meets the lake...it is so peaceful and quiet. I'm so happy to hear how much your class enjoys reading too!
