Today's Dog of the Day has a Golden Retriever named Clark and likes the color red. We also found out that Noah and Eden both have 4 letters in their names and they both have 2 syllables. Great observations!
In math today, we reviewed how to write our numbers to 10. At the end of the day we took out the iPads for the 1st time and practiced our number writing again using an app called Letter School. This is a wonderful app that takes kiddos through how to make letters and numbers by showing them, guiding them, and then having them do it independently. The kids always love finding out how each letter will be made- using bubbles, holiday lights, trains, etc. Always a big hit!
We also took part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Twitter challenge today. The challenge was issued to us and several other 1st and 2nd grade classes by a class of future teachers at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. Our job was to create the tallest free standing structure that we could using only 20 spaghetti noodles and 2 handfuls of mini marshmallows in 8 minutes. Kiddos worked in groups of 4 to promote teamwork and problem solving. Everyone did a FANTASTIC job of working together and rethinking and recreating their structures when they wouldn't stand. It was awesome to see the ideas that they came up with and how well everyone worked together!! When we were done, everyone said it was harder than they thought it would be. Here are a few pics of our class working through the project.
